They completed an 11 day orbit of the Earth giving the first live television broadcast from orbit. 10/11/1975 – Saturday Night Live makes its way into the homes of people around the country, with an opening night lineup of Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin and Laraine Newman. 10/11/1975 – Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born to Run’ becomes his first Top 40 hit. 10/12/1492 – Happy Columbus Day that may not be Columbus Day for much longer but, whatever your beliefs, it is the day that he arrived in the “New World” 10/12/1810 – Oktoberfest begins. Oktoberfest actually originated as a wedding celebration between Crown Prince Louis – becoming King Louis I of Bavaria – marries Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen and Bavarian royalty invited all the citizens of Munich to join in the celebration. They decided to have an anniversary celebration the next year and that gave rise to what is now known as Oktoberfest. 10/12/2007 – Al Gore wins Nobel Prize in reaction to his movement to get the world aware of global-warming. 10/12/1929 – The Philadelphia Athletics score 10 runs in the 8th inning against the Cubs in Game 4 of the World Series. THIS IS THE CUBS YEAR!! 10/13/1792 – The cornerstone is laid for what will become the White House. President Adams was the first to reside there in 1800. 10/13/2010 – The Chilean miners were finally rescued after being stuck underground for 69 days 10/14/1947 – Captain Chuck Yeager of the United States Air Force breaks the sound barrier as a test pilot for the X-1 rocket plane. 10/14/1964 – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was the youngest person to ever receive the honor at the age of 35. 10/14/1912 – Theodore Roosevelt – while at a campaign speech, is shot. He had a glasses case and manuscript in his pocket that kept the shot from being more than a flesh wound and went on to give his speech as scheduled. 10/14/2012 – And just a mere 65 years after a plane breaks the sound barrier, Felix Baumgartner jumps from a capsule attached to a helium balloon 24 miles above the Earth and falls “through” the sound barrier becoming the first unprotected, unpropulsed person to do so. 10/14/1994 – Happy Birthday Pulp Fiction 10/14/2003 – Bartman. Steve Bartman. The fly ball stealer. The one who cost the Cubs a game and a chance at the World Series. THIS IS THE CUBS YEAR! 10/15/1989 – Wayne Gretzky scores his 1,851st point, breaking Gordie Howe’s record of 1,850. He finished his career with 2,857 points and 894 goals and 1,963 assists. 10/15/2007 – Drew Carrey replaces Bob Barker as host of Price is Right. 10/16/1958 – The El Camino is introduced by Chevy. The original models were built on an Impala body and Chevy boasted it was “the most beautiful thing that ever shouldered a load” and “handles like a convertible yet hauls and hustles like the workingest thing on wheels.” It didn’t sell as Chevy had anticipated and they discontinued it after only two years, but then in 1964, they tried again building it on the Chevelle body instead of the Impala and then in ’68 used the SS engine which kept it in Chevy’s lineup for the next 23 years.
