Practice #2 for my little ones yesterday. It was good! I decided to do my thing and then take it up with anyone that questioned it as I went instead of making it harder on the girls and I. Nobody intervened. It was good.
I’m still trying to figure out exactly what I have on the team, though. We have 9 players.
One: CLEARLY never played before and is VERY uncoordinated. She’s going to be a handful.
Two: Seems to have played before. Has some decent skills, some fundamentals. I think she’ll be good with another practice or two.
Three: The oldest on the team. And her parents now realize it. She needed to start at this level. She is behind the power curve for her age and size but she’s already making progress faster than everyone else. She’ll do well if she wants to listen.
Four: She’s definitely played before but she’s so timid overall and that’s how she plays. If I can get her to come out of her shell more, she’ll definitely excel.
Five: Definitely hasn’t played before. The smallest on the team by far. But, she’s doing pretty well. She’ll get it if she keeps working.
Six: Has played with me before – it’s been a couple months so she needs to shake off some rust but she’ll be good.
Seven: Has been playing with me
Eight: Has been playing with me
Nine: Has been playing with me
So it should round out pretty well. I hope! But practice did go much better this week. So I am excited about the possibilities.
My other two teams had their first practices on Friday. My mid-level team is going to be interesting. I was given the youngest team whether or not the director wants to admit it. I have two girls that I specifically said weren’t ready to move up on my team. I have two girls that I know can carry a team. I have one that has played with me and I know will do pretty well. I moved one up myself but she’s going to have to work to be able to keep up at this level. I have one that played with another coach before and she’ll do alright. One I knew from another team and said she needed to move up and, though she has some work to do, I am happy to have her. And then I have one that is older than all the other girls and knows it. She isn’t the best on the team and she can’t move up at all to the next level. She just got stuck on a team that everyone else moved up on. It’ll be interesting.
My oldest team did well. They are going to have some work to do to keep up in games, but it could have been worse! We’ll see more tomorrow about both of those teams.
And my exciting coaching news of the week. Someone asked me to do a private lesson with their kid! I’ve never done a private lesson. I’m just a volunteer coach, not even part of their organization, really. But, they wanted me. So, I have my first private lesson tonight. It’ll be interesting. I’ve never done a one on one. I’m worried that she won’t get what she wants out of it. My fingers are crossed!
