Well, the first week of games are down and I must say, I am feeling a lot better now. I was stressing myself out a lot about the new teams and having a third team again. But, it didn’t go bad at all.
My Torreys, my youngest team, won both of their games 2-1. They still have a lot of work to do to get where I think they should be, but they played. They need to work on playing the right way more. I have a couple of ‘anti-passers’ but they worked, they moved, they served and they played. That’s all I can ask for at that level.
My Grays, my middle aged team, though they are all pretty young for that level still, went 1-1 on the day. They won their first three sets. They played well. We had some issues, more than I am used to, but, a little more work and most of them should do pretty darn good. Their second game, nobody remembered how to serve. We missed almost every serve which makes it difficult to win. I think if just one more person got a serve or two over, it could have changed the whole game. That’s a good start for a team I wasn’t sure about.
And my Blancas. The team I didn’t even know I was coaching until the last minute. They went 1-1 on the night as well. They won their first game 2-1 and lost their second 1-2. It was an awesome showing though. I was so happy with them. And, even better, I know exactly what their biggest issue was in their loss.
It’s been an interesting week on top of games for a couple of reasons, now, too. I have one girl that was moved up to Grays that should have stayed at Torreys. I have one girl on Torreys that wants to drop out because she doesn’t understand why she wasn’t moved to Grays. When the league director asked me if she was ready to move up, I had to tell him I wasn’t sure based on the fact that he moved someone else that wasn’t ready up and she is more ready than that girl but overall, she wasn’t ready. I don’t think anything is going to change and for a volunteer, I don’t like having to handle that kind of stuff!
But, overall, it was a good week. I’m going to go with that! Practice tomorrow for my two older teams. We’ll see if we can fix some of our issues and go into next week even better!
