Peyton Manning –
Peyton Manning is one of the greatest quarterbacks ever. He changed the position. Rules were made because of how he played and he was too smart to let manipulate the line the way he did. He’s always been one of my favorites to watch, hands down.
It made me really sad when Indy decided to part ways with him. And, as a true professional, he had nothing but nice things to say about them as he walked out the door, though you can imagine he was thinking some not so nice things. Always a class act.
My hope for him, when Indy discarded him, was that he’d go down to Arizona to finish out his career. I thought that was the best possible spot for him. He would have a stellar defense down there, play in a lot of warmer weather and have Larry Fitzgerald to throw to. I thought it made sense. Especially with the coaching staff down there and Manning’s relationship with Arians.
But, alas, it was not to be. He ended up here in Denver; a team I’ve never been super fond of and am even less fond of after living here. But, I can’t route against Peyton Manning and my husband hates me for it. He is a very big disliker of the Broncos (and it really didn’t help his case when DeMarcus Ware came to play for the Broncos too, only my favorite Cowboys defender).
It’s been very up and down watching him since he’s played here. I’ve seen flashes of his brilliance and I’ve seen flashes of who the hell is that guy that can’t throw ten yards down the damn field. I’ve seen the almost but not quites going into the playoffs again that have plagued him throughout his own career. It makes me sad. I think they won that Super Bowl against the Saints when he played for Indy. I also think Minnesota beat the Saints. I also am very, extremely, will never live it down sad that I did not get to see Brett Favre play against Peyton Manning in the Super Bowl. I would have gone absolutely nuts!
Anyways, I have lots of tangents. They’re important to me. But, back to Peyton. Though he may not be the Peyton of old all the time, he’s still great. He’s still a genius. He is still captivating. And I think and hope that this is his last season. I hate saying that. I don’t want him to go away but he needs to.
He needs to go out while we still can see the old Peyton in him. He needs to go out when his team is still winning consistently and not after they struggle to stay at .500. He needs to go while we can all still look back and say he was great right up to his last game.
I will say I never wanted Brett Favre to retire. I think he could still put his uniform on and play better than at least half the quarterbacks in the league and take a hit harder than any but a handful of them. But, that is a once in a lifetime type of person to see. Ok, another tangent. Twice in a lifetime. Michael Jordan is the same. I think he could suit up and still be a serious threat to anyone on the court in his way. It’s just something you really don’t see very often.
Ok, ok, back to Peyton. I would love him to be able to go out on top. I really wish it was for another team, but is there many other people that could be in the NFL and compose themselves as well as he does day in and day out. Always classy, always respectful, always professional, always personable. You just don’t see that very often and then to be so great on top of all that. It doesn’t happen.
He’s going to do great things this year. Win it all or not. He’s going to grow his records and maybe set one or two more. He’s going to win games. He’s going to make it to the playoffs. And then it is going to be sad saying goodbye to one of the greats, not just one the field, but one of the great people in sports to look up to. He’ll do great things, though; it’ll never be over for him.
