The Running Shoe Decision
I hate picking running shoes. It’s always a week long adventure for me, if not longer. I try on hundreds of pairs of shoes and go to dozens of stores. It is just not very much fun.
Obviously, it’s a necessity for any runner. And I have bad feet and bad knees, so the shoes I choose are of utmost importance to my body; the better the shoe, the less achy the body! Which is another reason it is absolutely no fun.
I read reviews and do the research and listen to the experts on what is the best for what type of person. I decide on a shoe based on that and go try it on. I don’t like it. It doesn’t fit my foot right. I don’t think I’ve ever tried on less than 10 pairs of shoes when I’ve purchased new running shoes – EVER!
Of all the shoes I’ve ever worn, a pair of Brooks and a pair of Asics are what were my favorites and those are the ones I tend to lean towards now. They both did me good. I need loud shoes to run in and those brands also tend to give me the color I need. If I’m going to be working so hard, I want to be able to smile when I put those shoes on!
This time around, I did my research, I picked a shoe and I went out to try it on. It wasn’t in many stores yet. I tried others on, Nike, Adidas, Newton, Saucony, Brooks, Asics – I’m not biased against brands, some have done me better than others but I know they’re always trying to improve. I couldn’t find a good fit. I went to Runners Roost and Dick’s. I went to the Asics and Adidas Outlets. It took two weeks this time around.
And finally, I found a store that had the shoe that I had read so much about. It was there and it was beautiful! I put it on and it felt rather good – definitely the best shoe I had put on so far. I had tried every other shoe on. The Asics Gel Quantum 360 was going to get me through my marathon training. It was going to take me on a few 20+ mile runs and we were going to be the best of friends whether I liked it or not!
And so far, so good. They fit my feet well. Great support all around. After having gone to the real light weight almost nothing there shoes, it is nice to have a full-bodied shoe that I can feel under my foot again. The cushioning is great in every phase of my stride. And, they are surprisingly light weight for how supportive and cushioned they are. I’ve tried the minimalistic shoes and the extreme support, cushioned shoes and this shoe has it all – a good happy medium.
All is fair in running and shoes. Only a couple more hundred miles to get out of them – then I’ll really know!
