Proud Mom moments are THE best moments in life. As kids get older and they want less and less to do with you, they come fewer and farther between. They’re always there, though. Even when it’s just little. There’s nothing like the ability to sit back and smile and say yep, that’s my kid, I did that, I taught them that, that’s because of me.
My 13 year old told me she wants to do a marathon. Now, before I go on, let me back up a little bit. My husband and I have always run. I ran in high school, he ran in the Army and it’s still important to both of us. We love our summer 5ks and 10ks and half marathons. Ok, he loves the 5ks and 10ks, I love all of it!
Every year, we’ve made the kids do at least one or two events with us. We think it is good for them. They need to get out and moving. They play sports, they play outside a lot. They ride their bikes or walk to school. They’re active kids overall. But, I think the runs are really good for them to do. They complain every time.
Well, mostly. My youngest has complained every time and the whole way of all of them we’ve done. My oldest, she’ll complain and then she’ll want to do it and then she’ll complain about it and then she’ll want to do it. When we get up to go she’ll complain and then when it starts, she’s ready to go. She’s seemed to thoroughly enjoy every event once it got off and running.
I’ve never asked them to go beyond a 10k and I stopped requesting the 10ks and have kept it to 5k and below. It’s a good distance for a kid. Now I’m training for a marathon. It’s been going pretty well. The long runs make me walk really funny for the rest of the day. I have bad knees and they let me know how they feel about all the miles. With my husband gone, my kids have taken good care of me when I get back from them! It was good.
So, when my 13 year old said she wants to do a marathon, I had to take a double take. Wait, wait, wait. I have to talk you into doing short runs with me, you watch me hardly able to walk after a long run and you want to do one now as well? That’s what I was thinking. What I said was “OK! Let me see, you won’t be able to do one this year now because you don’t have time to train. So, we can shoot for probably this same one next year. We’ll start training in March or April and by October, we should be able to get you up to the 26.2. Should we try a half marathon first, though?”
I went on and on. I was so excited. She saw how dedicated I was to this and she wanted to do it, too and I think she just wants to do it to make me proud of her, she wants to do it for me. That kid! I tell ya what. It was a great feeling that she wanted to do something because I wanted to do it and was working for it.
That should make for a fun running season next year, though. Her and I will take the world by storm and do a bunch of events together and work up to probably a half marathon to start. I can’t wait! J
