The wind was blowing, the trees swaying in the breeze. Perfect day. I stayed outside for a few minutes after work to enjoy this perfect March day. Then, duty called.
I went inside to find what was for dinner that evening so we could eat at a reasonable time. We had been eating so late recently with everything going on that we finally would be able to eat early if I got right to it.
The kids were at practice, the husband still at work so I got some peace and quiet while I cooked this time as well. I started digging through the fridge and the pantry getting all the ingredients together. It was going to be quite the display now that I actually had time for it.
Then the phone rang. Nobody calls me, I do not talk on the phone, I text, I am on social media but I am rarely actually using a phone as a phone. Who would be calling me?
It was my sister. Why would she be calling me? We never talk. Oh no, that cannot mean anything good. Oh no, that must mean something happened to Mom.
I cannot bring myself to answer the call. I know what it is about even if I do not know. It stops ringing, a text comes through. Call me ASAP. Now I really know. I go sit down. I pull myself together, after all, I've always been the strong one. I dial, it takes me a minute to hit send. I do not want to hear what I am sure I already know. I realize I have to be there for her and the phone starts ringing.
She tells me what I had already figured out. I asked what happened. I could not understand a word she said other than she was fine yesterday. I did not ask again. Silence. Silence. An abrupt end and both of our lives change forever.
