Pentatonix – A Review
I took my 13 year old daughter to her first concert last night. She has loved the band Pentatonix since one of her teachers had her listen to them in class. It’s been just short of an obsession. When we found out they were touring, we bought her tickets for her birthday. It’s been a wait but it finally came last night.
It was Kelly Clarkson’s concert. She was the headliner. My daughter doesn’t even like Kelly Clarkson which was unfortunate going to a concert when you don’t even like the headliner. It was even more unfortunate for me, the chaperone, who wasn’t the biggest fan of either group.
I’ve been to many concerts in my time. Every single one of them a rock concert. I had no idea what to expect at a show with these types of performers. I am going to start by saying, it was the calmest, most polite, sittingest show I have ever been to.
Abi Ann was the opener. She was a cute little country girl that seemed like she was just trying to get some stage time. I’m not a big fan of country music, but she was fun. She reminded me of Reese Witherspoon in Sweet Home Alabama. Don’t ask, she just did!
Eric Hutchinson was next. I’m not even sure what to say about him. He had an old school kind of soulful sound about him. Reminded me of a mix of Jimmy Buffet and the kind of pop music you hear on the radio today. It was an interesting mix. I enjoyed more than half the songs, there were a couple I really just did not get into at all though.
When Pentatonix came out, I thought my daughter’s head was going to explode. She went completely nuts. I have never seen her so excited and in awe before. Her friend that came with us said “OH my god, I’ve never been in the same building as a famous person before.” They were completely mind-boggled by being in the same room with famous people, famous people that they liked at that. It was quite entertaining and a good feeling as a parent that I got to do something that my kid was SOOOO excited about.
But, Pentatonix is a quite talented group. Acapella is not necessarily my thing, especially if I’m going to a concert, but it is impressive. The sounds they can make reverberate through a building with just their mouth and body is absolutely amazing and the harmonies they can put together are quite remarkable. I was a bit in awe the whole time. And Mitch I believe is what the kids said his name was, man that guy can sing. He has to be the most talented of the five there. My jaw dropped a couple of times listening to him.
We talked about it but ultimately decided to stay for Kelly Clarkson. I thought it was important for them to enjoy the whole experience and a couple of small opening acts and an acapella group, well, I knew Kelly was going to have a bigger show than the rest of them and make it seem more like a real concert for the kids to experience.
About three songs in, I realized I was about to sit through 4 hours of a concert and know maybe two songs total. I love music and I love moving to it, though, so it wasn’t the worst thing ever! She puts on a decent show and she actually impressed me as well. As I’ve said, I’ve only been to rock concerts so I don’t know how these types of performers usually are, but she seemed much more real than I expected her to.
She can sing. She came out barefoot in her nice dresses because she doesn’t like heels. I thought that was awesome. She gave her band a lot of credit even though it’s really just her. Apparently, she usually does karaoke at her shows where someone gets to perform a song on the stage with her. Unfortunately, she said, the person had to cancel last night so we didn’t get to enjoy that. I thought that was awesome that she does that for people though. She also does fan request where local fans get to select a song for her to sing at the show. She did a cover of a Pink song last night. I like quite a few Pink songs but, of course, I didn’t happen to know the one she did. She did bring out Eric Hutchinson to sing with her on it, though, which was cool.
She was open and honest with everyone. She apologized for changing the ending to a song. She said she had a surprise for everyone but said it a song early and was able to laugh at herself for that. She brought Pentatonix out to sing her, at least what I know as, newest single. She even told a story before a song and then sang the song and it really actually was quite moving. I was very impressed by that. I was skeptical about the show all together and then to be moved during my skepticism, that says something.
Overall, it was a good night. If for no other reason than I know I made my daughter’s year. It has been a couple of years now since I’ve been to a real concert though and I think I need on even more now! J
