9/26/1957 – West Side Story open’s on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre. Composed by Leonard Bernstein, West Side Story was a reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet taking place on New York’s West Side. It opened one day after the forced integration of an Arkansas school.
9/26/1996 – Astronaut Shannon Lucid returns to Earth after 188 days at space station Mir. Her return was delayed due to repairs and a hurricane and she set a new space endurance record, both for an American and for a woman.
9/26/1969 – “Here’s the story of a lovely lady….” Is heard for the first time on televisions across the country as The Brady Bunch premiers on ABC.
9/28/1941 – Ted Williams hits .400 for the season and is the last (to this day) player to have done so.
9/28/1967 – President Lyndon Johnson presents Sgt. David Dolby with the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service in Vietnam.
9/28/1960 – Ted Williams – 19 years after finishing a season above .400, hits a home run in his last at bat before he retires
