10/6/1991 – Liz Taylor married her 7th husband 10/6/1847 – Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre is published. 10/6/1926 – Babe Ruth sets yet another record, hitting 3 home runs in the 4th game of the World Series against the Cardinals. 10/7/2003 – Arnold Schwarzenegger is elected Governor of California 10/7/1913 – The moving assembly line is introduced at Ford plants which cut the production time on a Model T from 12.5 hours to 6 hours. 10/7/1984 – Walter Payton surpasses Jim Brown as the all-time rushing leader – finishing the game with 154 yards that day bringing his career total to 12,400. That was also Payton’s 59th time carrying the ball for over 100 yards in a game which also was a record. Payton racked up a total of 16,726 yards in his career and held the record until October of 2002 when Emmitt Smith surpassed him. 10/8/1871 – The Great Chicago Fire starts blazing. As the story is told, a cow kicked over a lantern in the O’Leary barn. The fire lasted for 2 days, killed 200-300 people, destroyed 17,450 buildings, left 100,000 people homeless and caused around $200 million in damages (which would be equivalent to about $3 Billion now). 4 square miles of the city were gone. The fire and the following reconstruction of the city gave architects a playground and the foundation was laid for a modern city with the world’s first skyscrapers. 10/8/1919 – The first transcontinental air race started with 63 planes racing between California and New York. Belvin Maynard won the race, taking just over 3 days on the way out, 3 days of service time and just under four days coming back. He had the least total elapsed time, but in flight time, 3 were faster than his 24 hours, 59 minutes and 49 seconds. 10/8/1957 – “Great Balls of Fire” is recorded in Memphis by one Jerry Lew Lewis 10/8/1967 – Che Guevara is executed in Bolivia 10/8/1942 – Roger Touhy escapes from prison after being sent there by being framed for a kidnapping by Al Capone. Touhy brewed his own beer and shipped it around the city and Capone wanted in on the action. Capone kidnapped Touhy’s partner, forced Touhy to pay $50,000 for his release and then killed him anyways. The feud came to a head when Capone put together a fake-kidnapping that he pinned on Touhy. When Touhy escaped, he went back shortly after and after another 17 years served, Touhy’s attorney finally convinced the court it was all a hoax and he was released.
