She read the letters over and over again. She went over the phone calls in her head. The e-mails were constantly staring her in the face. For the life of her, she could not figure out what went wrong.
Joslyn’s best friend had moved away years ago. Mixed feelings ensued, as they always do when big decisions are made and separations are what come of those decisions. It is easy to feel abandoned, left behind when you are the one that stays. It is easy to feel forgotten about when you are the one that left. It seems separation is the only way to find out if it is something that will truly last.
Bailey could never sit still. She needed to be out, seeing the world, exploring, discovering, doing. It didn’t matter what, as long as she was doing. Joslyn just needed to be around people, she needed someone there with her to know they were there for her.
When Joslyn and Bailey started fighting, Joslyn couldn’t figure out what happened. She thought she had done everything right. She thought she had been there. They may not have talked as often as they should have, could have, would have, but she was always there.
As Joslyn was reading through the e-mails one more time, she reminisced about all the good times they had before life took them on separate paths. The parties, the sleepovers, the hours of crying on each other’s shoulders, running away together for a weekend, being there for every milestone through each other’s lives. She wondered if it could really be the end of a life time of memories and a deeper knowing of each other than anyone else will ever come close to.
As she read through everything and analyzed every word, Joslyn just could not for the life of her figure out where it all went wrong. She missed her best friend, sure, but she never left her hanging, she never left her without someone to talk to. 1,800 miles never separated who they were to each other. They ever wrote letters, real letters, through the mail, just to have something that most people don’t have anymore.
They never fought like this before, though. Nothing, throughout their entire lives, ever made them this angry with each other. That is what bothered Joslyn the most. They were both mad at each other, madder than ever, but she had no idea why, what happened or what caused any of this.
As it was all playing over again in Joslyn’s head, she remembered something odd about some of the correspondence she had received from Bailey. She had just ignored it before, but, a handful of letters, e-mails and texts had seemingly random numbers on them. Maybe that was some kind of clue to what was happening between them. Maybe Bailey was coding something because she did not want to come out and say it.
Time to go through everything one more time. Joslyn locked herself in her house determined to find out where everything went wrong with her best friend. She wanted nothing more than to fix this. Her lifelong friend was not leaving her that easy.
