So, I took the day off work today. My day job that is, as an accountant. Always a writer!
Anyways, I took the day off because it is 5th grade continuation. That is SO exciting, we changed outfits about three times this morning and we asked mom to do our hair for the first time since picture day in September. She’s about to be a big middle schooler and be back with her big sister – who she has missed seeing around school these past couple of years. Big sister has also been out of school since Tuesday. The schools around here don’t like being on the same schedule it seems. But, since her and I both had the morning off with nothing going on, it was a perfect morning for a breakfast date.
Big sister is 13 now. Big sister doesn’t like talking to mom about things anymore. Big sister prefers to be closed off in her room or on her phone or nose in a book. When I want to talk to her about anything real, she likes to pretend she doesn’t hear me. And I admit, I haven’t made enough time to take her out as I should do more often now. But, we had a good breakfast. We sat and we talked and I let her lead the conversation for the most part. After a while I tried to get deeper and she caught on immediately so the conversation was just loose. Better than nothing, I suppose!
Taking the day off also let me get a nice long run in this morning. I did 5.5 miles and it’s been a long time since I’ve gone over 3.5 (other than my recent 10k a couple weeks ago). As we’re eating our breakfast, I look at in and say “well, there goes that five miles” and she just says “nah, that’s only about two miles worth of food”. It was too funny and, I’ll take that logic! That means I still got my average run in! But, now it’s time to get ready for continuation. They grow up so fast!
