The club decision is a hard one. When do you start putting your kids in club sports? Is it worth the extra money you’ll be paying and all the travelling you’ll be doing to do so? How do you know if it is the right club? What sacrifices do you make?
That is a challenge I am facing right now. I have two kids that want to play club volleyball. The older one I am a little worried about because she is older and I am afraid that all the roster spots in her age group are going to essentially be taken already by kids that have been playing club. She’s in a tough spot with it and that is another question I have. Is it worth it if your kid is the one sitting on the bench? I don’t want to pay that much for my kids to be on the bench, if I’m paying, they’re playing.
My younger one I’m not as worried about as she is at that age where she should just be looking into club teams. And we’ve been playing in a league that also does club so the coaches and directors have already seen her play and know what she is capable of.
That is where I don’t know when it is worth it. And I don’t know if this would be the right club even though it is what we know already so it adds that sense of comfort with the people. I have read a great many times that kids need to play club level sports in order to be noticed for scholarships and even for high school. When a high school coach knows they have a club player coming out for the team, there’s that added incentive that they already know how to compete at a high level.
So when does skill speak for itself? When do you notice the difference between a skilled player and a player that has been doing these things for a while already? Is it worth paying the club fees and travel expenses to hopefully get that scholarship later? And if so, how often, what are the statistics?
I suppose I have some research to do, but tryouts are coming up and open gyms have already started so my research needs to be done swiftly at this point. If anyone out there has any advice, statistics or knowledge about club sports, I am all ears! J
