Coach’s Corner –
Another week of games down and I’m not feeling too bad about where the teams are headed.
My little ones went 1-1 this week. They could have taken both games but they forgot how to move their feet. They froze and gave up some points they shouldn’t have. Chalk it up to a learning experience this week. They’re starting to play better as a team, though. That was good. One step at a time. Next week will be interesting for them as only four players will be available. Summertime – everyone is out of town, my four best players are gone. It’ll be ok…
My middle ones went 2-0 this week. They did better. They are still giving up some points they shouldn’t be giving up, still seem lost at times which is very uncharacteristic of them. I think some of them got too used to it being easy that they are trying to learn how to push themselves through a full game again. They’re getting there, I think they are starting to realize it. They just need to stay aggressive at all times, keep playing hard and they’ll be good. I just hope that clicks in them!
My big ones went 1-1 this week. They got absolutely decimated their first game. They played a real good team and it seemed they did not want to play from the beginning of that one so they didn’t stand a chance. When they are all ready to go and ready to give 100%, they can compete with any team. They are probably the smallest and the youngest team in this division. If they want to compete, they need to want it, they need to want to be aggressive and determined and ready.
I have to learn to be harder on these ones. A couple of them even asked me to be, and that was during their win. They let balls hit the floor, they paused to look at each other so they couldn’t get a good play on it, they wouldn’t set each other up and get good hits, they were slow. They pulled together and got a win in the 2nd game but I don’t know what was going on with them.
I had to tell them multiple times I don’t accept negative attitudes. I had to tell one of them not to question my decisions. It’s good that a new team came back the 2nd game because if they were still being how they were the first game, I think they would have seen how hard I could be on them. Learning experiences are good though. We all learned something from it. I’ve put together some points that I want to make sure to talk to them about next practice and hopefully we can all get on the same page and start playing as a team. I’m also going to have to think up some team building exercises and things they can do to make them pull together.
Overall, a good week though. Some disappointing moments that definitely could have been avoided but, live and learn and hopefully all three teams can learn something from this week and come ready to play next week.
