I have been coaching volleyball for three and a half years now and for a little over a year I’ve had 2-3 teams at a time and I still have a hard time each week making the lineups. I feel like a lot of my teams success has been because I put them in the best positions on the court to be put in the best position to win.
I don’t have them playing standard positions yet. I make them work on each position and learn every spot on the court so when they get to the point they need to start trying out for teams in order to keep going, they can show their all-around skill which will make them more valuable to any team that they can step in anywhere and succeed if not excel.
I stare every game at my lineup sheets thinking who has the best skills to play next to who. I know a lot of people would just use the same lineups every week, but I do not for multiple reasons. First, almost always, there is at least one player missing. Taking that one person out and just moving everyone up can change an entire lineup. Second, and this is the part that gets the most difficult, I make sure everyone gets the same playing time. Nobody has to be last in multiple times, nobody has to be first out multiple times. We don’t always get through a full serve rotation so I have to make sure to get people who may not have served in the lineup earlier so they can get the opportunity.
That is what makes it the most difficult. I will stare and say well this person can’t be out now because they were out last time so I need to switch them here but that means I have to move this person here and I’ll just go on and on and on. And I will take so much time to ensure they play a fair amount of time but are still in the best position to be successful on the court.
Taking on a third team again this season has made it difficult. First of all, I’ve only coached three at a time once before. One of those teams was a rec. team. This season, my third team is the higher level of team. Now I have to do a substitution lineup instead of basic rotation, now I have to decide who is better playing where. I still am not capable of making it unfair, no matter how hard I try to tell myself that everyone has to earn their spot, I still want everyone to feel they played a significant amount of time in the game.
Really, I’m just now learning to be harder on the players as it is. The owners that walk around to help coaches out always come over to my teams and say I know she’s going to be nice about it but I’m not so do it right! I’m getting there, but these lineups are hard on me. I essentially know what I need to do to give them the best chance to be successful but don’t know if I have it in me yet.
I guess I will do my best and see how this week goes. If we are still unsuccessful and I feel it is because I am too nice about my lineups, I’ll know what I have to do and have to teach them all to live in the real world. Nobody was easy on me as a kid in sports and look where I am now!
