8/22/1950 – Althea Gibson is accepted into the United States Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championship becoming the first African-American player to compete in a national Tennis competition in the U.S.
8/22/1864 – The International Red Cross is founded – pushed forward by Swiss humanitarian Jean-Henri Dunant – it was an agreement for nonpartisan care to the sick and wounded in times of war with medical personnel being neutral and called for a symbol that all wore to be recognized easily internationally. In 1901, Dunant was awarded the first ever Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work. In 1881, the American National Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton and Adolphus Solomons for victims of wars and natural disasters to work beside the International Red Cross.
8/22/1989 – Nolan Ryan strikes out his 5,000 batter. By the end of his career, he would have 5,714 strikeouts which is over 1500 more than the next best. Rickey Henderson, the all-time walks leader came up to bat at 4,999 and worked it to a 3-2 count thinking he could get walked again. A swing and a miss gave Ryan his 5,000 and Henderson said after the game “it was an honor to be the 5,000th. As Davey Lopes says, If he ain’t struck you out, you ain’t nobody.”

8/24/1814 – British forces march unopposed into Washington, D.C. as most members of congress and government officials flee, President Madison and his wife escape just before the British arrive. President Madison had just arrived back from the Battle of Bladensburg where he took command of a battery and became and remains the only President to use his authority in actual battle.
