8/25/1835 – The New York Sun Newspaper publishes the first of 6 articles claiming life on the moon. Now known as “The Great Moon Hoax”, it was said that fantastic animals such as unicorns, two-legged beavers and winged humanoids resembling bats were sighted. It was meant only as satire, as it claimed the information was from the Edinburgh Journal of Science which had stopped publication years before and the author did not exist; however, people did not see through any of that.
8/25/1939 – The Wizard of Oz open in theaters around the country. It was not a huge hit when it first opened. In 1956, when it was televised for the first time, 45 million people watched.
8/25/1875 – Captain Matthew Webb became the first person to swim the English Channel, doing in in about 22 hours.
