9/12/1951 – Sugar Ray Robinson gets a rematch against Randy Turpin who had beat Sugar Ray for the belt just a couple months prior. The loss was a 15 round decision going to Turpin, the rematch was a 10 round ref stoppage for Sugar Ray. Up to that point, the decision would have been 8 rounds to 2 for Sugar Ray.
9/13/1814 – Francis Scott Key writes a poem. “The Defence of McHenry” was written by Key in his relief of seeing the American Flag still flying at daybreak over the Fort. The British were unable to destroy the fort and Key was moved to write down what he had seen. The poem was printed in newspapers and then set to music of a English tune “To Anacreon in Heaven”. People started referring to it as The Star-Spangled Banner and President Wilson, in 1916, thought it should be played at all official events. On March 3, 1931, it was adopted as the National Anthem.
9/14/1901 – President McKinley was shot by a Polish-American anarchist at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo. Unable to find the bullet during operation, McKinley died of gangrene 8 days later. The anarchist was executed for the murder of the President.
