9/16/1932 – Gandhi begins his hunger strike while in prison
9/16/1908 – William Crapo Durant created General Motors. He was the head of the Buick Motor Company at the time. Durant, with the GM venture, wanted to sell all kinds of cars instead of just one like many other automakers did at the time. They put together a group of 30 companies to come together as GM, including Durant’s Buick, Oldsmobile, Cadillac and Oakland (now known as Pontiac). An electric company even came on board with GM. When Durant continued to buy up companies, the corporation’s board forced him out and he started another car company with the Chevrolet brothers.
9/16/1620 – The Mayflower heads out from England on its way to the ‘New World’. On November 21, the ‘Pilgrims’ reached the New World, landing in Massachusetts.
9/16/1940 – President Franklin Roosevelt approved a draft – requiring all men 26-35 years of age to register for the Military draft. This act came from the growing threats of Nazi Germany and the militarist regime in Japan. After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, the draft seemed like an unnecessary measure as men all over the country ran to enlist.
9/16/1981 – Sugar Ray Leonard – the WBC champ, knocked out Thomas Hearns – the WBA champ. Leonard was behind most of the fight but and by the 9th, Sugar Ray was half blind from the beating he had been taking. But, in the 13th round, Leonard was ready to finish it.
