9/17/1862 – The Battle of Antietam – the bloodiest single day battle in American history – takes place.
9/17/1787 – The U.S. Constitution is signed by 38 of 41 delegates. Article VII of the document stated that the document was not binding until 9 of 13 states ratified it. Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia and Connecticut were the first to do so. Some states wanted amendments made and would not sign until they were assured these would be proposed immediately. With that assurance, Massachusetts, Maryland and South Carolina hopped on board. New Hampshire was the 9th and final state needed. Virginia and New York did eventually ratify as well.
9/17/1983 – The first black Miss America is crowned – Miss Vanessa Williams.
9/17/1796 – President Washington prepares the final draft of his farewell address to be published in papers a few days later.
