9/22/1961 – President Kennedy establishes the Peace Corps as a permanent government agency – in March of the same year, he established the Peach Corps. Congress passes legislation on this day establishing it on a permanent basis with a first year fiscal budget of $40 million.
9/22/1927 – Jack Dempsey doesn’t return to a neutral corner after knocking down Gene Tunney in a heavyweight title bout in Chicago. When Dempsey finally got back to a neutral corner, about 5 seconds had already passed, but the ref could not start the count until then. Tunney got back up 9 seconds into the count, which would have been about 14 seconds and 4 seconds too late for him. Tunney ended up winning the fight by decision.

9/22/1985 – “Farm Aid” is born. The first Farm Aid concert is held in Champaign, IL sprung on by a remark made by Bob Dylan at a Live Aid show. Live Aid was a fundraising concert to raise money for African famine relief. Bob Dylan thought some of the money should go to protecting American farmers and their land. Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp announced plans for “Farm Aid” within a month of Dylan’s remarks. Those four with the likes of Johnny Cash, Waylong Jennings, Joni Mitchell. Sammy Hagar even decided to show up to support America. Since the first concert, over $33 million has been raised to support small farmers.
