Potential –
How do you make a kid realize their potential? Coaching kids, every day I come across this question. Some kids are always ready to go and do their best. Some kids just aren’t up for pushing themselves and competing. And then there are the kids who could be the best but only show that sometimes. I don’t know if they get lazy or lost or don’t want it all the time. But, it gets frustrating.
I always try to do what is best for the players, as their coach. It is a league, not club, not uber competitive, just a lot more competitive then rec. It is 100% an in between of rec and club. I know the kids who are just there to play and have fun and I know the kids that come to take it seriously and be the best they can be. I allow the kids that obviously don’t have the competitive drive to be themselves and just enjoy playing. It is when those kids that want to be good and want to get better slack off and don’t work up to everything they can be that gets frustrating.
So, back to my original question…how do you make a kid realize their potential? Is it possible to make them give 100% 100% of the time at this age? One practice a week and one double header – only two nights a week I want 100% from these kids that have the drive most of the time. Is it possible to get there? Flashes of brilliance followed by falling asleep on the court. Maybe another step, a more difficult challenge, tougher competition. Maybe. We’ll see.
