6/24/1997 – The U.S. Air Force released a report saying there was no UFO crash in Roswell, NM.
6/25/1876 – The Battle of Little Big Horn took place. The Native Americans were led by Chief Crazy Horse and Chief Sitting Bull against the U.S. forces led by Lieutenant Colonel Custer.
6/26/1948 – The U.S. begins the Berlin Airlift. When Germany was divided into Soviet, American, British and French zones of occupation, the city of Berlin was also split into sectors, half belonging to the Allies and half the Soviets. The Soviets blocked off all land and sea routes to West Berlin meaning everyone there was being deprived of food among other crucial supplies. U.S. and British pilots started delivering food by plane for over a year. Overall, more than 1.5 million tons of supplies were delivered for a total cost of over $224 million.
6/27/1922 – The first Newbery Medal for a children’s book was awarded. The recipient was “The Story of Mankind” by Hendrik Willem van Loon. The award gets its name for an 18th century English author who is said to be the father of children’s literature.
6/28/1953 – The first Corvette is assembled in Flint, MI. Only 300 were made that year.
6/28/1997 – Mike Tyson infamously bites Evander Holyfield’s ear taking a chunk with him.
6/29/1995 – A U.S. space shuttle docks with the Russian Space Station. The shuttle Atlantis docked with station Mir and formed the largest man-made satellite ever to orbit the Earth.
